Workaround: book flexible workspace in hotels around Germany

Workaround is the project of German entrepreneur Maxim Streletzki. The idea is simple. You pack your laptop and rent workspace in some of Germany’s most luxurious hotels, paying by the hour with free wifi. It solves a problem many hotel chains have, which is lots of empty space. Hotels get to look busy and make extra money from their lobby.

From concepts to an investor prototype

Maxim first asked me to design some concepts for his iPhone app. That quickly grew into a full interactive prototype he could show investors and business partners, taking you from logging in all the way to paying for your time in the workspace.

The app was designed to be simple to use, with lots of beautiful white space. We wanted to move away from how apps were usually designed at the time, so we dropped list views for purely location-based views. From there you tap through to a hotel to see its photos, amenities and how to get there.

This project played to my strengths: lots of creativity and white space! It let me use clean, functional design as a feature, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.
