How much for an App?

You wouldn’t believe how many email enquiries I get simply asking this question, “How much for an App?”

If you’re a freelance designer and work within the technology sector you’ve probably had this email too, it’s frustrating and IMO lazy.

So before you fire off that email asking a professional to give you a cost for a project, try thinking about these things…

  1. What does the app do?

  2. Describe in detail your app functionality

  3. What platforms are you looking at?

  4. Who’s your target audience?

  5. What’s your budget?

  6. Do you have competitors, if so who are they?

  7. Do you have a engineering team / developers ready?

  8. What limitations do you have from a technical point of view?

  9. Do you require advanced features such as admin tools?

  10. Do you have a prototype or beta?

The BEST way to approach a designer or developer about your project is to send them a detailed brief, listing requirements and breaking down everything covered above.

Don’t worry, there’s lots of resources online to help you. Start with Canva’s “Writing an effective design brief: Awesome examples and a free template to get you started”

Side note. It’s OK to not know some of these questions but please, try to explain what you want a freelancer to hand over to you, as guesswork can be costly for everyone.
